40th Annual Roughwater Swim

Date: Saturday, August 3, 2013

Location: Lifeguard Tower #1, Santa Cruz City Main Beach.

Time: 11:00 A.M. Registration and Check-in begins at 9:30 A.M.

Course: Contestants receive a siren start, enter the ocean at Lifeguard Tower #3 on the east side of the Municipal Wharf, swim parallel to the pier, around the end, and then straight in to the finish in front of the Santa Cruz Dream Inn Hotel above the beach on the west side of the pier. The course is one mile. Restrooms are available on the wharf and adjacent to the beach. Two start waves will be used this year: USA Swimming, 18 years and under and Masters 18 to 39 years, first wave, Masters 40 years and up, second wave. Pre Race Instructions at 10:45.

Entry: $35.00 per person if entered online by midnight July 22 or postmarked by Monday, July 22, 2013. Late or race day registration is $40.00.  Final online entry deadline is 5pm Pacific time on August 2, 2013.  All participants receive a commemorative item. Race cost includes new USMS Insurance Fee.  Online entries are paid by credit card to "ClubAssistant.com Events".

Eligibility: ALL ENTERED SWIMMERS 18 YEARS AND UP must be currently registered with United States Masters Swimming.** Non-members of USMS must register with USMS (18 years and up) for $46.00 or sign up for the race with a USMS One-Event Membership.  Swimmers 18 years and younger must register with USA swimming. USA Swimmers must also attach their registration card or register directly with USA Swimming and present the form on Race Day.

Divisions/Awards: USA Swimming Age groups: 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18. USMS: Awards for PacMasters Category 1 swimmers: 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, etc, Mens and Womens. Medals 1st through 3rd place. Safety: Safety services provided by the Santa Cruz City Beach Lifeguard Service and Santa Cruz Surf Life Saving Association. All contestants are required to wear a day glow swim cap (provided). A one-hour cutoff time will be enforced. No personal escorts are permitted. Wetsuits, tri-suits and insulated swim caps permitted, no other swim aids allowed. Contestants in wetsuits and other defined swimwear such as rashguards are eligible for USMS/PacMasters points or awards in their respective Category (Cat2). The expected water temperature is 60 degrees.

Entry and Payment: Swimmers are encouraged to enter online on Club Assistant. Swimmers may also send checks payable to SCSLSA for entry. Also, send your completed and signed USMS/PMS registration form and checks payable to PMS for swim eligibility if not registered with this swim organization. SANTA CRUZ 2 MILE OCEAN CRUISE

ENTRIES: Enter online on Club Assistant.  Or use consolidated entry form from PMS newsletter, or visit http://cruzswim.org to fill in entry form, print and mail. Pre-race registration is $45 per person if entered online by midnight on July 20 or received in the mail by July 20. Late and race day registration is $50. Final online entry deadline is 5pm Pacific time on August 3, 2013.  Entry fee is nonrefundable.  Online entries are paid by credit card to "ClubAssistant.com Events".

All swimmers must be PMS/USMS registered. Proof of USMS registration is mandatory. This swim is sanctioned by Pacific Masters Swimming and conducted under USMS Long Distance and PMS Open Water guidelines.

DIRECTIONS: From Highway 1 North come into town on Highway 1/Mission St. Continue along Mission for 0.6 miles. Turn right onto Bay Ave. for 0.9 miles. Find parking as you would for the previous day’s one mile swim in the vicinity of the Dream Inn hotel.
From Highway 17 continue south, toward the ocean, on Ocean St. (highway 17 ends at the top, or north end of Ocean St.), for 0.7 miles to Soquel Ave. Turn right on Soquel Ave., go 0.3 miles over the bridge to Front St. Turn left onto Front St., go south 0.6 miles along Front St. until it curves to the right and meets the intersections of Washington St. and Center St.
Find parking and walk south to the Santa Cruz Pier. The race starts on the beach to the left side of the pier/wharf (by the Ideal Fish Restaurant deck).

PARKING: Various kinds of parking are available in the vicinity of the Santa Cruz Pier. Long term parking and metered parking is available closer to the Pier and the start. A short walk from the Pier is more metered parking and free on-street parking.

DIVISIONS: The usual USMS divisions: 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, etc., for both male and female using the Category 1 swim suits, and Category 2 wet suit divisions for male and female swimmers, also with divisions: 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, etc.

Please indicate on entry form if wearing a wet suit. Entrants must be at least 18 years old.

CHECK-IN AND RACE DAY REGISTRATION: Opens at 7:00am. All swimmers must check-in by 8:00am.
Pre-race instructions and mandatory safety meeting at 8:00am. Swim begins at 8:30am. Fog may delay the start of the race.

START: One wave start from the beach. Please organize yourself according to how fast you swim. If you are a slower swimmer, start behind those who are faster. Please start on the beach between the two marker flags and behind the starting line.

COURSE AND WATER TEMPERATURE: The Cruz Cruise 2 Mile Swim starts (and finishes) just to the left (South/East) side of the Santa Cruz Wharf. Swimmers will start in one wave, entering the water on the left side of the wharf (as you face the ocean). Swim to the first turn buoy directly off the end of the wharf and turn right to swim towards shore on the opposite side of the wharf. Swim to the second turn buoy (adjacent to the wharf lifeguard headquarters). Turn left for a leg parallel to shore. You will swim until you reach the third turn buoy. Turn left again and head directly back to the original first buoy at the end of the wharf.
One final left turn here will have you returning on the final leg with the wharf on your left shoulder. Finish on the beach at the original start/finish line. Water temperature is approximately 57 to 62 degrees.

WATER SAFETY: Please bring your own swim caps. Brightly colored swim caps are required of all swimmers. Paddle craft will patrol race course. A cut-off time of 1 hour 45 minutes will be strictly enforced.

EQUIPMENT: Entrants may wear wetsuits, but will be entered into Category 2 division for competition and awards. Use of fins, pull buoys, or other swimming devices are prohibited. Soft hand paddles may be used as prosthesis only if they do not present a safety hazard to other swimmers. Race director shall have final decision.

AWARDS: Ribbons to top three finishers in each age group and gender division of Category 1 swim suits. And awards to top three male and female Category 2 wetsuit finishers.

AFTER THE RACE: Drinks and munchies provided by Santa Cruz Masters.

If you have completed event registration for one race, ie the Cruz Cruise, and would like to add the other race, ie the Roughwater Swim, please send an email to event registrar Paul Wrangell at pfwrangel@gmail.com. Include in your email request 1) your name, 2) your web entry ID, 3) the race you want to add, and 4) permission to charge your credit card from the first registration.

Note: If paying by credit card, your credit card statement will reflect a charge from "SC MASTERS AQUATICS."
