Instructor: Bill Meier

Bill Meier is the Aquatics Director for Bard College at Simon’s Rock and the Head Coach of the PaceMakers Swim Team. As the Chairman of the New England LMSC, he directed the effort that led to the "April is Adult Learn to Swim Month" initiative which included training over 100 volunteers to teach non-swimming adults. Bill has run a successful SwimAmerica program for almost 20 years and has coached age-group, high school, college and Masters programs.  Bill is a USMS Level 3 certified Masters coach. He was the captain of his college team and, as an ocean lifeguard on the south shore of Long Island, competed in the Ironman and Ocean Dory races.  

ALTS Prerequisites: You must be a current USMS member to participate in the course and receive USMS ALTS Instructor certification. You must be able to perform the following 5 water competency skills:

  • Step or jump into the water over your head.
  • Return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute.
  • Turn around in a full circle and find an exit.
  • Swim 25 yards to the exit.
  • Exit from the water. If in a pool, you must be able to exit without the use of a ladder.
Certification Process: Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.

Fees: $300 per instructor registration. Your ALTS instructor certification is valid until December 31, 2015 and can be renewed by paying a $50 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year.  USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.

Maximum: Maximum attendance is 25.

Who should attend? Anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, adult swim lessons both publicly and privately.  Anyone interested in supporting their community by helping to teach adults to swim.

Scholarships:   NT LMSC will reimburse attendees $150 after they provide validation of successfully completing the course. To qualify for reimbursement you must be a member of NT Masters AND have contacted the NT board for approval by March 21st (via Lynn Morrison at lynnmorrison1868@gmail.com)

Cancellation Policy

ALTS certification course registrations are non-refundable and non-transferrable to another individual. However, you may transfer your registration to a course at an alternate date and location.  Questions, please email Marianne Groenings at mgroenings@usms.org.
