Instructors: Dave Burgess, Mel Goldstein, and Bill Brenner

David Burgess Dave Burgess is a USMS level 3 certified coach, a USAT level 2, and USAC level 2 certified coach.  He has been involved in the triathlon and endurance sports community since 2000 and began coaching in 2009. Dave also has a certificate in Sports and Performance Nutrition.  As the founder and head coach of Podium Training Systems, Dave works with athletes of all levels – from first time competitors to elite level athletes – competing in all race distances. Dave is also the founder and head coach of the Podium Swim Club in Colorado Springs, where triathletes and swimmers alike progress towards maximum performance via technique, mechanics, and performance-based training.  Dave has presented webinars, and written, articles on open water swimming, stroke mechanics and video analysis for both the athlete and coach.  He also assists fellow coaches with athlete swim stroke mechanics, stroke analysis, and overall training prescriptions.  Dave comes from strong swimming background, competing as a youth through collegiate level competition. Originally from the Midwest, and after spending time in Chicago and New York, he and his wife now reside in Colorado Springs.

Mel Goldstein was the 2001 Speedo US Masters Coach of the year, Mel won the 1997 Ransom J. Arthur MD Award that goes annually to a person who best supports the objectives of Masters swimming. It is the highest honor bestowed by United States Masters Swimming. He is a past President of USMS and a USMS All American with 255 Individual Top Ten Achievements. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.

Bill Brenner is the Education Director for USMS. He has 30 years coaching experience working with age group, college and Masters swimmers. Bill has served as a support team member for his local Masters club, team representative to the LMSC, an LMSC officer as the Top Ten Recorder, a multi-year delegate to the USAS convention and a member of national committees. He has served as the meet director for multiple events, helped organize the 2013 Pan American Masters championship and hosted the 2014 YMCA Masters national championship in Sarasota, Fla.. A USMS Level 4 certified Masters coach, he enjoys attracting adult athletes to the sport of swimming and coaching all levels of ability.

Prerequisites: You must be a current USMS Member to participate in the course and receive USMS certification.

Certification Process: Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework, including all required applications and successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS Level 1 or 2 Certified Masters Coach certification.

Fees: $180 for Levels 1 and 2 Certification. $100 for Level 1 or Level 2 only. Recognized coaches receive a $10 discount on certifications, i.e. $160 for Levels 1 and 2 Certification. $90 for Level 1 or Level 2 only.  View the benefits of becoming a recognized coach.

Maximum: Maximum attendance is 40.

Who should attend? Current full-time, part-time, volunteer coaches or anyone interested in becoming a Masters coach.  Anyone interested in starting or supporting a Masters program.

Scholarships:  NT LMSC will reimburse related FEES (only) for the Level 1 and/or 2 Coaches Certification course with proof of successfully passing the class. To qualify for reimbursement you must be a member of NT Masters AND have contacted the NT board for approval by March 21st (via Lynn Morrison at lynnmorrison1868@gmail.com).

Cancellation Policy

Coach certification registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable to another individual. However, If you can provide the USMS national office with a minimum of 72 hours notice before the start of the scheduled course, you may transfer your registration to a course at an alternate date and location. Written email notification must be sent to clubandcoach@usmastersswimming.org
