U.S. Masters Swimming is hosting a USMS levels 1&2 Masters coach certification course on Saturday, January 30, 2016.

Instructors:  Scott Bay and Mel Goldstein

Scott Bay is an ASCA Level 5 Certified Coach and has been actively coaching and teaching swimming since 1986 at a variety of levels.  High School swimmers he has coached have gone to state meets and placed in the top ten on numerous occasions and Masters swimmers he currently coaches include National Champions, All Americans, and World Record Holders who have swam to over 300 top ten USMS swims and more than 30 World records in just the last 5 years. Throughout a career that includes teaching swim lessons, coaching Age Groupers and Senior Swimmers, as well as Triathletes and adults, Bay has taught literally thousands how to swim or how to swim better.  He has also written numerous articles on technique and coaching for both websites and publications in addition to being a major contributor to the revised USMS/ASCA certification curriculum and presents at clinics across the country.

Mel Goldstein was the 2001 Speedo US Masters Coach of the year, Mel won the 1997 Ransom J. Arthur MD Award that goes annually to a person who best supports the objectives of Masters swimming. It is the highest honor bestowed by United States Masters Swimming. He is a past President of USMS and a USMS All American with 255 Individual Top Ten Achievements. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.

Prerequisites
You must be a current USMS Member to participate in the course and receive USMS certification.

Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework, including all required applications and successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS Level 1 or 2 Certified Masters Coach certification.

Fees
$180 for Levels 1 and 2 Certification. $100 for Level 1 or Level 2 only.

Maximum
Maximum attendance is 40.

Who should attend?
Current full-time, part-time, volunteer coaches or anyone interested in becoming a Masters coach.  Anyone interested in starting or supporting a Masters program.

Scholarships
The Florida LMSC is offering a $50 scholarship to all Florida LMSC members who successfully complete the coach certification course. Scholarships will be issued after you complete the course. 

The Florida Gold Coast LMSC has set aside a total of $1500 for Scholarships for this Education Course to be divided amongst interested FGC LMSC members.   To be considered for one of these scholarships, please email Marty Hendrick FGChair@USMS.org .  Include in the “Application Email” to Marty, your name, club, email address, phone number, whether you are a full or part time coach, and why you would like to be considered for this scholarship.  To be eligible to receive the FGC LSMC Scholarships, “Application Emails” should be received no later than, Monday, January 4, 2016.  Each scholarship recipient may receive up to the cost of the course registrations (not to exceed the amount paid for the course.)  You will receive notification the week of January 11 if you are receiving and amount of the scholarship. Those who are selected to receive the award will submit their course receipt and copy of completion certificate to receive the reimbursement.

For coaches coming from outside the Florida LMSC, please contact your individual LMSC for scholarship availability.

  • Lunch will be provided by USMS - Please note that most of the lunches are sandwich based and do not always include a vegetarian option or recognize dietary restrictions and food allergies. If you have food restrictions, please feel free to bring along something that will accommodate your needs.
A USMS Stroke Development Clinic is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 9 am - 12 pm at Orlando YMCA Aquatic and Family Center.  All coaches who attend this coach certification class are eligible to attend as a coach on deck at no charge.

Your online registration for this course will be paid by credit card and processed by Club Assistant. Please look for "ClubAssistant.com Events" on your credit card statement.

Lodging
Courtyard by Marriott Orlando South is offering a special rate of $139.00 per night for anyone interested in accommodations on Friday, January 29 or Saturday, January 30, 2016.  Rooms must be reserved by December 28, 2015 in order to secure this special rate.

Cancellation Policy

Coach certification registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable to another individual. However, If you can provide the USMS national office with a minimum of 72 hours notice before the start of the scheduled course, you may transfer your registration to a course at an alternate date and location. Written email notification must be sent to clubandcoach@usmastersswimming.org
