ALTS Instructor Certification -- Boston

U.S. Masters Swimming is hosting a USMS ALTS instructor certification course on Saturday, April 23, 2016, in Quincy, MA.

Saturday, April 23
Check-in: 8-8:30 a.m.
Classroom instruction: 8:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m.*
In-water pool instruction: 2-4 p.m.

*Lunch will be provided by USMS. Please note that most of the lunches are sandwich-based and do not always include a vegetarian option or recognize dietary restrictions and food allergies. If you have food restrictions, please feel free to bring along something that will accommodate your needs.

Instructor

Bill Meier is the Aquatics Director for Bard College at Simon’s Rock and the Head Coach of the PaceMakers Swim Team. As the Chairman of the New England LMSC, he directed the effort that led to the "April is Adult Learn to Swim Month" initiative which included training over 100 volunteers to teach nonswimming adults. Bill has run a successful SwimAmerica program for almost 20 years and has coached age-group, high school, college and Masters programs.  Bill is a Level 4 USMS  certified Masters coach. He was the captain of his college team and, as an ocean lifeguard on the south shore of Long Island, competed in the Ironman and Ocean Dory races.  

ALTS Prerequisites
You must be a current USMS member to participate in the course and receive USMS ALTS Instructor certification. You must be able to perform the following five water-competency skills:

• Step or jump into the water over your head.
• Return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute.
• Turn around in a full circle and find an exit.
• Swim 25 yards to the exit.
• Exit from the water. If in a pool, you must be able to exit without the use of a ladder.

Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.

Fees
$300 per instructor registration. Your ALTS Certified Instructor designation is active until the end of the calendar year in which it is achieved, and can be renewed by paying a $30 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year.  USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.

Maximum
Maximum attendance is 25.

Who should attend?
Anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, adult swim lessons both publicly and privately.  Anyone interested in supporting their community by helping to teach adults to swim.

Scholarships 
During 2016, the New England LMSC will provide up to 15 separate $100 subsidies for NELMSC members who become ALTS certified and intend to teach adult swim lessons. These subsidies are need-based, contingent upon attendance, and will be handled as reimbursements after the course. Online registration only. Registration closes at midnight Pacific time on Friday, April 22, or when the course enrollment reaches 25.
