Instructors: Mel Goldstein and  Sue Welker

Mel Goldstein was the 2001 Speedo US Masters Coach of the year, Mel won the 1997 Ransom J. Arthur MD Award that goes annually to a person who best supports the objectives of Masters swimming. It is the highest honor bestowed by United States Masters Swimming. He is a past President of USMS and a USMS All American with 255 Individual Top Ten Achievements. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.

Sue Welker is the head coach and founder in 1999 of the Naperville Waves Swim Club in Naperville, Illinois.  In 2006 she was awarded with the USMS / Speedo Coach of the Year award and the 2000 & 2005 ILMSA Coach of the Year. Her passion is coaching and after swimming at the University of Iowa she resumed coaching when she became involved in triathlon in 1995. She has spent 7 years coaching Naperville Central High School and several years with age group swimming. Throughout this time she has grown the Naperville Waves to the largest USMS program in Illinois with 5 team state championships. She has trained athletes and raced herself all distances of triathlon and was certified and presented for USA Triathlon. Sue maintains her RN license, ACE personal training certification, Pilates certification and indoor cycling certification.

Prerequisites
You must be a current USMS Member to participate in the course and receive USMS certification.

Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework, including all required applications and successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS Level 1 or 2 Certified Masters Coach certification.

Fees
$180 for levels 1 and 2 certification. $100 for level 1 or level 2 only. Please note that levels 1 and 2 coach certification are designed to be taken together, on the same day, since we usually do not return to the same location each year.  Level 1 is offered in the morning and level 2 follows in the afternoon.

Maximum
Maximum attendance is 40.

Who should attend?
Current full-time, part-time, volunteer coaches or anyone interested in becoming a Masters coach.  Anyone interested in starting or supporting a Masters program.

Scholarships
The Illinois LMSC will be offering USMS coaches $100 scholarships and mileage reimbursement for travel over 50 miles upon completion of the level 1 and 2 certification class. Applications should be submitted to coaches@ilmsa.com.  If you are seeking scholarship assistance from another LMSC, please contact your LMSC for scholarship availability.

Coach certification registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable to another individual. However, If you can provide the USMS national office with a minimum of 72 hours notice before the start of the scheduled course, you may transfer your registration to a course at an alternate date and location. Written email notification must be sent to clubandcoach@usmastersswimming.org
