The 2020 Brogan Open Water Classic is cancelled. Cleveland MetroParks has cancelled all activities through the end of September 2020 due to safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no opportunity to reschedule or find a different venue for 2020. Refunds will be processed in the coming days. We will return stronger in 2021.

EVENTS: There will be 1-mile and 2-mile races swimming concurrently on a diamond-shaped course in Lake Erie. The start will be in the water. The finish will be on the beach. Swimmers will swim in a clockwise direction around the course.

The 2-mile race will be the 2020 U.S. Masters Swimming Middle-Distance Open Water National Championship. A 2-mile race for One Event registrants and others who do not wish to participate in the 2020 USMS Middle-Distance Open Water Nationals will be run concurrently and will be ranked and awarded separately.

Wetsuit swimmers will be eligible for ranking and awards within the Wetsuit Division of the 1-mile and 2-mile races. Wetsuits are not permitted in the 2020 USMS Middle-Distance Open Water Nationals.

WAVES: Multiple waves will start 4 minutes apart. Waves will be seeded according to 1-mile entry time. The number and makeup of waves will be determined by the Event Director. Non-championship 2-mile swimmers will be in separate waves, following the 2020 U.S. Masters Swimming Middle-Distance Open Water Nationals waves. Wave information will be emailed to swimmers prior to race day.

LOCATION & DIRECTIONS: The event will be held at Edgewater Beach within Cleveland Metroparks, located approximately two miles west of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Take the 73rd Street exit off the Route 2 Memorial Shoreway. Turn north toward the lake, go around the circle and follow the signs to the Edgewater Beach House at the far end of the parking lot.

RACE DAY TIME LINE:
Check-in 6:30 a.m.
Mandatory Pre-Race Safety Meeting: 7:45 a.m.
Start of First Heat: 8:00 a.m.
Awards and Social: approx.11:00 a.m.

RULES: Current 2020 USMS Rules will govern this event.

ENTRIES: Online registration preferred. Online entries will close 11:59 p.m. July 10, 2020. Paper entries must be received by the Event Director by Thursday July 9, 2020. No late entries, no race day entries, no exceptions.

ELIGIBILITY:
2020 USMS registration is required of all participants. USMS One Event Registration is available for an additional fee. One Event registrants are not eligible to compete in the 2020 USMS Middle-Distance Open Water Nationals.

FEES: Early Bird Entry Fee $70.00
Regular Entry Fee (after June 16, 2020) $85.00
USMS One Event Registration Fee $15.00
USMS members 80 years and older may enter at no cost. However, you must use the paper entry form.
Fees are non-refundale.

AGE GROUPS: 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, etc. in five year increments as high as necessary for both men and women. Age group is determined by age on 12/31/2020. Participants must be 18 years of age on 7/18/2020.

ENTRY LIMITS: Entries are limited to 350 total for all events.

CHECK-IN: Participants will be required to show Photo ID.

AWARDS & POST-RACE SOCIAL: The awards ceremony and post-race social will follow completion of all events. Awards will be given to the first six places in each age group for both men and women. Also, each swimmer who completes their swim will receive a finisher’s award.

SAFETY: The Event Safety Plan will be emailed to all participants prior to race day. In addition, all swimmers must wear the electronic timing chip and swim cap provided at check-in and have their race number written on their arm. In the best interest of all participants, the Event Director will have final authority as to whether or not to conduct the swim.

MANDATORY SAFETY MEETING: All participants must attend the mandatory Pre-race Safety Meeting. Participants who do not attend will not be allowed to swim in the event.

WATER TEMPERATURE: Anticipated water temperature will be in the range of 72 to 78 degrees. If the temperature exceeds 78 degrees at race time, wetsuits will not be permitted.

TIME LIMIT: A 90 minutes time limit will be in effect for all swimmers. 90 minutes begins at the start of the last 2-mile wave.

FRIDAY NIGHT SOCIAL: Join us on the rooftop of the Ernst & Young Building in downtown Cleveland for an evening of food and friendship. Enjoy a panoramic sunset view of the Lake Erie shoreline. Price is $35 per person, due by July 3, 2020.

USMS OPEN WATER CLINIC: To be held 2–4 p.m., July 17 at Lakewood H.S. Pool, 1595 Robinwood Ave, Lakewood, OH 44107. Partnered with U.S. Masters Swimming. Whether you are a beginner or experienced swimmer, we all recognize that open water swimming presents many different types of challenges. Sighting, currents, buoy turns, pack swimming, and rough water all require specific techniques. At the clinic, you will learn from experienced open water swimmers. The agenda includes a classroom and in-water session along with time for questions. Participants will take away skills to help with navigating all types of open water. $30 fee.

CHARITY FUNDRAISER: Proceeds from the event support the Malachi Center’s (Tax ID #34-1506478) Urban Kids Swim Camp. Donation Forms are available on-line and upon request from the Event Director. There will also be a box on race day for “gently used” swim equipment, new goggles and towels.

TIMING: Race will be chip timed. A $30 fee will be charged for chips that are not returned.

RESULTS: Meet results may be found at www.ohiomasters.com a few days after the meet.
