CULVER CITY, Calif. (February 29, 2012) -- Now in its second year, the Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge is a one-of-a-kind aquatic fundraiser where every lap helps fund free water safety and swim lessons for under-served LA kids. Presented by the LA Tri Club, this epic swim event unites Southern California athletes to collectively swim 2,462 miles -- the point-to-point distance between LA and New York -- in a single day, in a single pool.
The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge aims to reverse local child drowning statistics: drowning surpasses all other causes of death among children age 14 and under in California, while Los Angeles County has by far the highest rate of near-drowning of any county in the state.
In its inaugural year, the 2011 Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge raised more than $21,000, with 100 percent of these funds going to scholarships that enabled 500 kids in Compton, South Los Angeles and Culver City to learn to swim. Among the participants in the 2012 event will be four-time Olympic gold medal winning swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg and scholarship recipients who are now able to “swim it forward” to help other deserving kids.
The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge will take place on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 5 a.m. to midnight at the Culver City Plunge aquatic center located at 4175 Overland Avenue, Culver City. Swimmers of all levels including recreational swimmers; people from local masters programs at UCLA, SCAQ, Tower 26 and Equinox Fitness; high school and college swim teams and triathlon clubs will join with LA Tri Club members in this non-stop marathon of lap swimming. To complete the distance of 2,462 miles, LA Tri Club encourages people who may want to only swim a few laps to participate as well as those who can swim multiple miles.
The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge gives people a chance to get a great workout at one of the Southland’s top aquatic centers while raising funds to provide free swim instruction for kids who
otherwise could not afford lessons,” said Larry Turkheimer LA Tri Club co-founder. “Building on the success of our inaugural year, our goal is to double the amount raised in 2012 so that we can help even more kids learn how to become safe in the water and experience the fun of swimming.”
Swimmers participating in the Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge will sign up for one or more 30-minute stages and will receive lane assignments with swimmers of similar speed. Swimmers are encouraged to register in advance and may request specific swim times.
Long-distance swimmers who want to rack up extra miles for the cause can register for the 75 spots exclusively reserved for ‘Launchers’ and ‘Closers’ at the beginning and end of the Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge.
Entry prices are as follows:
30-minute swim ONE STAGE $25
60-minute swim TWO STAGES $35
90-minute swim THREE STAGES $45
Launchers & Closers (5 - 8 a.m. or 9 p.m. - midnight) $65
The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge also offers participants a chance to workout with elite coaches who will be on deck throughout the day.
