CULVER CITY, California -- Now in its seventh year, the Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge is a one-of-a-kind aquatic fundraiser where every lap swam helps fund free water safety and swim lessons for under-served LA kids.
The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge aims to reverse local child drowning statistics: drowning surpasses all other causes of death among children age 14 and under in California, while Los Angeles County has by far the highest rate of near-drowning of any county in the state.
Since its inception, this great event has positively effected the lives of over 4,000 children between the ages of 3 and 14 in underserved neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles county, with 100% of the funds raised by swimmers going towards providing FREE swim lessons to children in underserved areas. C2C continues its relationship with 'One with the Water,' an organization that teaches children and adults with disabilities and terminal illnesses, how to swim.
The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge will take place on Sunday, June 4, 2017 from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Culver City Plunge located at 4175 Overland Avenue, Culver City. Swimmers of all levels including recreational swimmers, people from local masters programs at UCLA, Tower 26, Equinox Fitness, and triathlon clubs will join with LA Tri Club members in this non-stop marathon of lap swimming. Every lap helps provide swim lessons for those in need. LA Tri Club encourages people who may want to only swim a few laps to participate as well as those who can swim multiple miles.
"The Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge gives people a chance to get a great workout at one of the Southland’s top aquatic centers while raising funds to provide free swim instruction for kids who otherwise could not afford lessons,” said Larry Turkheimer LA Tri Club co-founder. “Continuing to build on the success of this event, our goal is to double the amount raised in 2016 so that we can help even more kids learn how to become safe in the water and experience the fun of swimming.”
Swimmers participating in the Coast 2 Coast Swim Challenge will sign up for one or more 30-minute stages and will receive lane assignments with swimmers of similar speed. Swimmers are encouraged to register in advance and may request specific swim times.
