EVENT: 4th Annual Tallchief Open Water Challenge consists of a 1/2 mile, 1 mile or 2 mile swim. Proceeds of this event will benefit the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma Camp Tallchief Scholarship Fund and Tulsa Masters Swim Club.

DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 11, 2011, 9:00 AM CST

LOCATION: Tallchief Lake, Zink Ranch, Sand Springs, Oklahoma

SCHEDULE:

7:30 AM: Registration open 7:30 to 8:30 AM. All swimmers are required to check in at the registration table.

8:15 AM: Warm up 8:15 to 8:50 AM. Lifeguards must be present in boats before swimmers can enter the water.

9:00 AM: Mandatory pre-race briefing at 9:00 AM, on the beach, just prior to the start of the first wave.

9:05 AM: Start of 1 mile & 2 mile swims.

9:15 AM: Start of 1/2 mile swim

10:00 AM: Post race feast begins at the Tallchief Lodge

~ 10:30 AM: 1/2 mile awards ceremony at the Tallchief Lodge

~ 11:00 AM: 1 mile & 2 mile awards ceremony at the Tallchief Lodge

VENUE: Tallchief Lake is a private lake on the Zink Ranch property. There will be no outside boat traffic. Expected water temperature ~ 80 degrees. This lake is NOT connected to nearby Skiatook Lake.

PARKING: Plenty of parking available at the Tallchief Lodge, no charge. Please note, you will walk approximately 1/4 mile downhill to the water front. Wear sturdy shoes!

COURSE: The swim course is an out and back course marked by large regatta buoys.

The 1/2 mile swimmers will swim out 1/4 mile & return to the finish.

The 1 mile swimmers will swim one full lap of the entire course.

The 2 mile swimmers will swim 2 laps of the entire course.

SAFETY: Swimmers must wear the swim cap provided in the color that designates the event entered. Please notify the event director if you have a latex allergy.

Swimmers are required to attend the pre-race briefing at 9:00 AM at the water front.

The swim course will be monitored by persons in kayaks, and canoes. A rescuer will be stationed in a power boat monitoring the course in the event an evacuation is necessary.

1 and 2 mile swimmers will be required to announce their race number to an official stationed at the turn around. The 2 mile swimmers will also be required to announce their race number to the official standing on the boat dock prior to starting their 2nd lap.

SWIMMERS WHO DROP OUT OF THE RACE AFTER A POSITIVE CHECK IN AT REGISTRATION ARE REQUIRED TO NOTIFY AN OFFICIAL AT THE FINISH LINE!!!

ELIGIBILITY: Swimmers 18 years old and older. Swimmers must be 2011 United States Masters Swimming (USMS) members or purchase a one event membership (OEVT). Swimmers must be 18 years old the day of the event to participate. USMS ONE DAY EVENT MEMBERSHIP FEE is $15. You may obtain a USMS membership online, www.usms.org/reg, or join race day. There are no qualifying times for the USMS sanctioned event.

WET SUITS: Wet suits are allowed, but those wearing wet suits will not be included in the awards. Anticipated water temperature is 80 degrees. Swimmers who will swim in a wet suit must declare this when they check in.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Online entries are highly encouraged! NO REFUNDS!

Online registration closes at 11:00 pm CST Friday, September 9, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: $25 for USMS members. For non-USMS-members there is a $15 additional fee for USMS One Event membership. Add $10 for race day entries. All participants receive a swim cap, t-shirt and a post race meal.

RACE DAY ENTRIES: Race day entries are accepted. $35 for USMS members. $50 for non-members. Registration closes at 8:30 AM sharp on race day! Checks payable to Tulsa Masters Swim Club (TMSC).

T-SHIRTS: One-of-a-kind race t-shirts designed by USMS member, Jocelyn Wood, are guaranteed for all entries received by September 1, 2011. Additional t-shirts can be pre-ordered for $10 each. Left over shirts may be available for sale at the post race party.

DONATIONS: A portion of proceeds from this event will be donated to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma Camp Tallchief Scholarship Fund. You can designate an additional donation during the registration process.

AWARDS: Awards will be given to the top 3 male & female swimmers in the 1/2 mile event and top 5 male & female swimmers in the 1 & 2 mile events. Please stay to enjoy the cookout and camaraderie of your fellow swimmers.

SOCIAL: POST RACE COOKOUT FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS & VOLUNTEERS.

Spectators/ friends/ family can partake of the post race food for $5/ person. Wrist bands available at the registration table.

WHAT ELSE?

Sturdy shoes for walking approximately 1/4 mile down hill on a gravel road to the waterfront. This will be an up hill walk on the way back!
Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen & bug spray.
Showers will be available following the event.
Please make arrangements to have your children supervised while you are swimming.
NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, NO PETS! NO SMOKING! (Facility rules)

DIRECTIONS: Zink Ranch, Sand Springs, OK

Sand Springs, OK is located approximately 10 miles west of downtown Tulsa.
Zink Ranch is located approximately 9.7 miles north of Sand Springs at the termination of Hwy. 97 & the intersection of Rock School Road.
The site of the Tallchief Open Water Challenge is located another 4.5 miles from the entrance of the ranch.

CHECK-IN WILL CLOSE AT 8:30 AM SHARP! PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: to Zink Ranch, Sand Springs, OK:

From Tulsa or points east of Tulsa:

Hwy. 64/ 412 (Keystone Expressway) WEST to 129th West Ave. exit. (You will see a green ZINK RANCH sign just before the exit.) At the top of the exit, turn left, then right (North) onto Hwy. 97 (The arrow on the sign at the intersection points north to Skiatook, no mention of Zink Ranch). Drive approximately 9.7 miles north on Hwy. 97 to entrance of Zink Ranch. (The road dead ends at the intersection of Hwy. 97 & Rock School Road)

From Enid/ Stillwater (points west of Tulsa):

Hwy. 64/ 412 (Cimmaron Turnpike) EAST to 129th West Ave. exit. Turn Left at the top of the exit to cross over HWY 64/412. Follow the directions above.

From OKC via Turner Turnpike, I-44:

Exit 215, Hwy. 97N Sand Springs, go north on HWY 97 approximately 8 miles. Go WEST on HWY. 64/412 (Keystone Expressway) toward Stillwater/ Enid. Exit on 129th West Ave. Follow the directions above. Do not go through Sand Springs on Hwy. 97, you will be very confused!

At the Ranch Entrance:

Once you reach the entrance of the Ranch, volunteers will direct you through the electronic gate and to the site of the lake swim. Follow the Tallchief signs. The camp is located approximately 4.5 miles from the entrance of the ranch.

CHECK-IN WILL CLOSE AT 8:30 AM. A required race briefing will occur at 9:00 AM, just prior to the first wave of swimmers.

Please allow PLENTY of time to arrive, check in, & get to the swim start. There is some walking involved from the parking lot to the water front. It takes longer than you think it will to drive the 4.5 miles to the site of the swim. You cannot drive 50 mph on this road!

HOTELS: The closest hotels to Zink Ranch are located in Sand Springs just off HWY 64/412 ( Keystone Expressway) at the 81st Street W. Ave exit. Google ‘hotels in Sand Springs’ or call Hampton Inn/ Sand Springs, 918-245-8500 or Best Western Sand Springs Inn & Suites, 918-245-4999.
