The Naples Island Swim & SUP events consist of 8 swimming and SUP (stand up paddleboard) races of varying length. The races are:

  1. 3-Mile fun Open Stand-Up or Prone Paddleboard, unlimited board lenths,
    one loop around Naples Island (13 and older)
  2. 6-Mile elite SUP double loop around the island (13 and older)
  3. 1 mile swim through the canals of Naples Island (11 and older)
  4. 3-Mile swim around the island (13 and older)
  5. 1000-Yard swim buoy line loop (11 and older)
  6. 500-Yard swim buoy line, point to point (ages 9-10)
  7. 200-Yard pier swim (ages 7-8)
  8. 1 Mile swim + the 1000Y swim in combination (11 and older)
All races take place within the Los Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, CA. The water temperature generally ranges from the mid to high 60s. Starts and finishes take place between 2nd St. and Ocean Blvd off Bay Shore Avenue and 54th Place.

Competitors in the SUP events and the 3-Mile swim must be at least 13 years old. Swimmers must be at least 11 years old to enter the 1-mile and 1000-Yard swims. The 500-Yard swim is limited to the 9-10 age group and the 200-Yard swim is limited to the 7-8 age group.

Registration for the swim races is open to all interested competitors with sufficient swimming ability. Current participation in competitive aquatic organizations such as US Masters Swimming, USA Swimming or USA Water Polo is preferred, but not required. In open water swimming there are no walls to grab and rest. Competitors should be certain of their capability to swim their desired race distance without stopping. Competitors may switch their entered distance at beach registration on race day for any reason.

Registration for the 6-mile elite SUP event is limited to 12'6" length boards for women and 14' length boards for men in the main age group categories. The 3-mile paddleboard fun event is an Unlimited Open class for both men and women with non-standard board lengths.

ENTRY FEES AND DEADLINES FOR ENTRIES:

10 years of age and younger: $30.00 pre-registered or on race day (pre-registered preferred)
11 years of age and older:
$50 if entry is postmarked or processed online on or before Friday, July 23, 2016;
$55 if postmarked or processed online July 24 through August 11, 2016;
$60 after August 11 (on-line) or for race day beach entry.
Add $15 for "1 Mile + 1000Y" combination.

Paper entries must be received by August 6th.
Online entries will close at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11


COURSE INFORMATION:
Course Maps
Course maps will also be posted in the check-in area. Water temperatures average in the mid-60's. Water quality reports can be view through Heal the Bay. Wetsuits will be allowed in the swim races, but competitors who use wetsuits or any other flotation devices will not be eligible for awards. The race courses follow natural landmarkings, so there is minimal guidance during the events. There are 15 saftey ladders on public docks around the island.


PARKING:
Alamitos Bay is located at 54th Place & Bay Shore Avenue (between Ocean Blvd and 2nd Street) in Long Beach, CA. Parking is available along Ocean Blvd and in the City parking lots. NOTE: Bay Shore Ave. is closed daily to parking and through traffic in the summer months from 9 AM to 5 PM.


TIME LIMIT:
The SUP races will have a 2 hour time limit. The 1 mile and 3 mile swim races will have a 2-1/2 hour time limit. Anyone still in the water after the limits will be picked up and returned to the finish area.


SAFETY:
Race planning is coordinated with the City of Long Beach Marine Safety Division to ensure safe coverage of the competition. Swim competitors are encouraged to wear brightly colored swim caps to enhance their visibility in the water for paddling escorts and lifeguards. Caps will be provided at event check-in and registration. Competitors are also encouraged to use their own paddlers. Escort paddlers and kayakers must not interfere with any competitor, and shall show courtesy to all competitors at all times.

No kayaks or paddle boards will be provided by the race organizers, but rentals are available though Standup Rentals. Board or kayak rental may require demonstration of capability. Please make arrangements for rentals and safety checks prior to race day.

AWARDS:
Custom Naples Island Swim & SUP awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in all age groups (see below for Age Groups) and races* according to gender. Swimmers wearing wetsuits will not be eligible for awards. 

*Open 3-mile Prone/SUP; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall (no age groups).

AGE GROUPS FOR AWARDS:

Swimming Men and Women:
7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 70-74, 75+

6-Mile Elite SUP: Men 14' and Women 12'6"  - 13-18, 19-29, 30-49, 50+

Unlimited and Prone Fun Paddle: Open, awards for first 1-3 finishers only, male or female, no age groups.

CONTINGENCY:
In the event of unfavorable water conditions all efforts will be made to reschedule the event. Competitors will be notified of a rescheduling through the email address provided at event registration. Text message notification is also available as an option during registration. If a new date is not available competitors will be refunded half of their entry fees. The remaining portion of the fees will be used to cover expenses incurred.

CHECK-IN:
Race day registration and check-in will open at 7:00 AM and close for each event 20 minutes before the scheduled start time for that event. Registration tables will be setup on the beach by the intersection of 54th Pl. and Bay Shore Ave.

1000 Yard: 9:40 AM
500 Yard: 10:00 AM
200 Yard: 10:20 AM

EVENT PROCEEDS:
All proceeds from the event benefit the Aquatic Capital of America, a 501(c)(3) organization. The Aquatic Capital of America Foundation was formed in 2008 to promote the myriad of aquatic activities offered in Long Beach, California; to recognize, honor and support the City of Long Beach and its aquatic athletes, coaches, and organizations; and to promote water safety and education. The Foundation also supports community and regional efforts to cleanse local waterways as well as to increase the number of local aquatic facilities.
