ALTS Instructor Certification -- Denver

U.S. Masters Swimming is hosting a USMS ALTS instructor certification course on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

Saturday, April 9
Check-in: 8-8:30 a.m.
Classroom instruction: 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m.*
In-water pool instruction: 2-4 p.m.

*Lunch will be provided by USMS. Please note that most of the lunches are sandwich-based and do not always include a vegetarian option or recognize dietary restrictions and food allergies. If you have food restrictions, please feel free to bring along something that will accommodate your needs.

Instructor

Dave Burgess is highly involved in U.S. Masters, high school, and age group swimming. He is the head coach of the Podium Swim Club, a U.S. Masters Swimming group based in Colorado Springs. Dave caters to swimmers who are looking to improve performance, as well as those that are relatively new to swimming. He is also the head coach of the Discovery Canyon High School swim team, as well as an assistant coach with Colorado Springs Aquatics. He is a USMS Adult Learn To Swim certified lead instructor, a USMS Level 3 Masters coach, a USA Swimming/ASCA Level 3 coach, as well as a USA Triathlon level 2 certified coach . Dave also holds a certificate in sports and performance nutrition.

ALTS Prerequisites
You must be a current USMS member to participate in the course and receive USMS ALTS Instructor certification. You must be able to perform the following five water-competency skills:

• Step or jump into the water over your head.
• Return to the surface and float or tread water for one minute.
• Turn around in a full circle and find an exit.
• Swim 25 yards to the exit.
• Exit from the water. If in a pool, you must be able to exit without the use of a ladder.

Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.

Fees
$300 per instructor registration. Your ALTS Certified Instructor designation is active until the end of the calendar year in which it is achieved, and can be renewed by paying a $30 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year.  USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.

Maximum
Maximum attendance is 25.

Who should attend?
Anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, adult swim lessons both publicly and privately.  Anyone interested in supporting their community by helping to teach adults to swim.

Scholarships 
The Colorado LMSC is offering $100 scholarships to the first ten (10) members of the Colorado LMSC who register and become certified. The scholarships will be handled as reimbursements after the course is completed. Contact Brian Hoyt at bkhoyt@gmail.com to apply.

Online registration only. Registration closes at midnight Pacific time on Friday, April 8, 2016, or when the course enrollment reaches 25.

Lodging
The Doubletree Denver-Thornton has reserved a limited number of rooms for members of our group at a special rate of $104 on Friday, April 8. If you are interested in securing a hotel reservation for this event, please contact the hotel by March 11, 2016, and reference Group USM. You may also reserve your room online.
