U.S. Masters Swimming is hosting a USMS ALTS instructor certification course on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, in Lewisville, Texas.

Classroom instruction: 8:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m.*
In-water pool instruction: 2-4 p.m.
*Lunch will be provided by USMS. Please note that most of the lunches are sandwich-based and do not always include a vegetarian option or recognize dietary restrictions and food allergies. If you have food restrictions, please feel free to bring along something that will accommodate your needs.

is a lead USMS-certified Adult Learn to Swim instructor. He is the aquatics director for Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., and the head coach of the PaceMakers swim team. As the chairman of the New England LMSC, he directed an effort to teach adults to swim, and that program has grown into USMS’s national April is Adult Learn-to-Swim Month campaign. Bill has run a successful SwimAmerica program for almost 20 years and has coached age-group, high school, college and Masters programs. Bill is a Level 4 USMS-certified Masters coach. He was the captain of his college team and, as an ocean lifeguard on the south shore of Long Island, competed in the Ironman and ocean dory races.
You must be a current USMS member to participate in the course and receive USMS ALTS Instructor certification. You must be able to perform the following five water-competency skills:
- Step or jump into deep water and return to the surface
- Float or tread water for one minute
- Turn around in a full circle and find an exit
- Swim 25 yards to the exit
- Exit from the water
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.
$300 per instructor registration. Your ALTS Certified Instructor designation is active until the end of the calendar year in which it is achieved, and can be renewed by paying a $30 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year. USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.
Maximum attendance is 25.
Who should attend?
Anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, adult swim lessons both publicly and privately. Anyone interested in supporting their community by helping to teach adults to swim.
The North Texas LMSC will reimburse registration fees for instructors who successfully complete the ALTS instructor certification class. In order to qualify, you must submit a copy of your receipt and certificate of completion to the NT LMSC treasurer for reimbursement. You will also be expected to contribute to the NT quarterly newsletter, and help out with one of the LMSC workout clinics that take place twice a year.
